In advance of recording their fifth studio album, Leah, along with drummer Will Gorin, sought to dramatically expand the band’s sonic palette. She is a strong believer that nothing is quite as it seems, and that a greater reality exists beyond what the human eye can see. The iconography of this record explores the space where science and the whimsical intersect, and where the unfamiliar becomes hardly recognizable. For her, inverted colored rainbows and orbs became a gateway to exploring the illusory things we see and experience in everyday life. The album’s artwork and visuals reflect that ethos as well. Ultimately, it allowed her to find poetic catharsis. With Parallel Timeline, Wellbaum explores the feeling of being trapped inside her own consciousness while simultaneously searching for a meaningful connection to the universe, and all the mysteries it contains.ĭuring the writing process, Wellbaum sought to connect with her inner child - a voice that allows ideas to flow freely and without censorship. On Slothrust’s latest album, bandleader Leah Wellbaum pushed herself to try and understand her own spirituality on a deeper level, putting a lens on the core wound of the human experience, the idea that we’re alone. But she’s never quite examined it the way she has now with Parallel Timeline. Check out their music video for “One More For The Ocean” (from Parallel Timeline) below and keep scrolling to see more photos from the show.Leah Wellbaum has never been afraid of her own humility or honesty. See all of their upcoming tour dates here. Slothrust is currently in the middle of their US tour that they’ll be wrapping up at the end of April. They played all of my favorite songs like “7:30 AM”, “Magnets, Pt.2”, “Planetarium”, and my favorite song of all, “Crockpot”. It was not a large crowd unfortunately, but the audience sang along throughout the show. I am more biased towards their harder songs as they remind me of ’90s grunge music, but the pop influence of their latest albums are pretty catchy as well. Sometimes her silly lyrics make you forget that she has an amazing voice and when you see her live you also get to witness impressive guitar solos. Leah Wellbaum is extremely talented and it’s something you realize even more from their live performance. They mixed their set with songs from various albums spanning their decade-long career. Then came an amazing performance from Slothrust. Their music is very reminiscent of some of the Latin rock bands I’ve heard throughout my childhood and they rocked out pretty hard with songs sung in both English and Spanish.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about it till I heard them play it live.Ĭalva Louise opened the show, and the extremely humble Jess Allanic expressed her gratitude to have the opportunity to tour the US as she described it as a dream of hers. Their latest release Parallel Timeline came out last year and it’s a little different than some of their older stuff. Slothrust is one of those bands that randomly came up on one of my curated Spotify playlists a few years back and I always include them on the list of bands to check out when I’m asked about new music. Last Sunday I took a trip down to Asbury Lanes to check out one of my all time favorite bands, Slothrust.
